James Porter is Head of UK Journalism Training, for the BBC Academy. He has been a journalist at the BBC for more than 25 years. He started his career as a trainee Local Radio reporter before moving in to BBC Sport for the launch of Radio 5 Live.


He spent nearly 20 years in the BBC Sport department winning several Sony awards and covering sports ranging from Golf to Horse Racing. Gradually he spent more and more time in sports journalism and he was Head Of Sports News for 5 years before leaving BBC Sport to join the BBC Academy where he is responsible for all the journalism training for staff based in the UK.


James is also a board member of the Broadcast Journalism Training Council and was first a mentor of the JST in 2014.
